Many people think that graduate programmes are a swift route to the top but it doesn’t mean that it's an easy ride

GRADUATE traineeships can help you to get to the top of the tree just that little bit faster. Unfortunately for photocopyingphobes, this does not mean that you avoid starting at the bottom.

1. Some boredom is inevitable. “Not everything is going to be exciting,” says Ruth Stokes, the director of recruitment at KPMG. “Some things are going to be repetitive, some things are going to be boring, but it will develop you as an individual. Don’t expect everything to be handed to you on Day 1.”

 

 

 

2. Find out what to expect. “Research the company, understand what’s really on offer, ask that at interview,” Stokes says. Talk to former trainees to get a sense of what life’s like behind the glossy brochures.

 

 

 

3. Find out what’s expected. “Know what they seek and know what will get you promoted,” says Johanna Keech, head of the Civil Service’s Fast Stream training at the National School of Government.
